Prescribed Burn Planned for Mason Valley Wilderness Area on May 16, 2025

Date
May 15 2025

The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is scheduled to conduct a prescribed broadcast burn for the Nevada Department of Wildlife on approximately 500 acres of the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area north of Yerington, Nevada. The areas to be burned are important regional habitat for many species of fish, waterfowl, shorebirds and a variety of other wildlife. Burning is planned to begin at 10:00 a.m. on May 16, 2025, but will only proceed if weather and site conditions are favorable for meeting the prescription.

Prescribed fire is a critical land management tool used to improve wildlife habitat, reduce the risk of severe wildfires, improve ecosystem health, and protect nearby communities. Broadcast burns use fire to clear excess vegetation (also known as "fuels") across a broad area. These burns are carefully planned and carried out under strict conditions to ensure the fire remains within designated boundaries.

What residents can expect:

  1. Smoke: Light to moderate smoke may be visible in the area during and after the burn. Smoke impacts are expected to be temporary.
  2. Increased fire personnel and equipment: Residents may see fire crews, vehicles, and aircraft in the area during operations.
  3. Temporary trail or area closures: Access to some public lands or roads near the burn unit may be restricted for safety.
  4. Burning activity limited to daytime hours: Ignitions are planned to begin mid-morning and end by late afternoon to take advantage of optimal weather conditions.
  5. Ongoing monitoring: Fire personnel will continue to monitor the area after active burning is complete to ensure the fire remains contained.

The burn is being conducted in coordination with local, state, and federal partners, and follows a prescribed fire plan that includes air quality and safety considerations.
