The Division hires more than 50 seasonal staff that work anywhere from five to nine months per year. Seasonal staff work in the conservation nurseries, fire engine crews, fire dispatching, and incident business capacities.

Becoming a NDF Seasonal Firefighter
Seasonal firefighters are part of the Nevada Division of Forestry’s wildland fire management team. Most seasonal firefighters are assigned to wildland engine crews. Some are assigned to helitack or fire prevention. Seasonal firefighters work during the fire season, generally May to October, depending on fire and weather conditions.
Seasonal Firefighter Duties
Seasonal firefighters with the Nevada Division of Forestry perform wildland fire suppression, fire prevention, fire safety education, fuel management, and equipment and station maintenance duties. Some Seasonal firefighters drive and operate fire engines, water tenders and other equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
To be a seasonal firefighter you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Driver’s License at the time of appointment. You must have graduated from high school or have equivalent education. You must pass the Work Capacity Test, which tests your ability to perform arduous fire fighting duties. Prior to taking the Work Capacity Test, you must take a physical examination at your expense. To pass the test you must carry a 45-pound pack, for three miles in 45 minutes or less. You should start preparing for the Work Capacity Test at least six to eight weeks before the test. If you pass the work capacity test you will be invited to an interview. You must also pass a pre-employment drug test. Seasonal firefighters assigned Helitack need previous wildland firefighting experience and depending on the assigned duties the employee may need to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Seasonal Firefighter Training
If you are selected as a seasonal firefighter you will attend extensive training, where you will learn how to control wildland fires, operate wildland fire apparatus, use chain saws, assist helicopter operations, and help with fire prevention and fire hazard reduction projects.
