Conservation plants for sale at state nursery

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Division of Forestry State Tree Nursery in Las Vegas is open to the public year-round and has extended its fall hours to include selected Saturdays in October and November. The nursery has more than 45 species of locally grown native and adapted trees, shrubs and forbs for land owners in Southern Nevada.

Most species are available in 1-gallon containers for $3.00, and in 5-gallon containers for $8.25, however 17 species of trees and shrubs are available in 15-gallon containers for $29.00. The nursery urges customers to return empty growing containers for recycling.

The plants are meant to be purchased for conservation uses such as, but not limited to, windbreaks, soil erosion control, water conservation, reforestation and for improving wildlife habitats. For the nursery policy and plant list, please visit www.forestry.nv.gov.

The nursery is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. New fall hours include the following Saturdays: October 17, and 24, and November 7 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The nursery is located at 9600 Tule Springs Dr. next to Floyd Lamb Park.

BLM, Forest Service, & NDF Lifting Western Nevada Fire Restrictions on September 25

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office, the Carson & Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and the Nevada Division of Forestry’s Sierra Forest Fire Protection District announce the lifting of fire restrictions that have been in place since July 24, 2009.

Restrictions will expire at 12:01 a.m., Friday morning, September 25, 2009.

“Decreasing daily sunlight, increasing fuel moisture levels, and cooler evening temperatures are allowing us to lift fire restrictions,” note the agency Fire Management Officers. “However, wildfire danger remains high because of hot daytime temperatures, and extremely dry valley and mountain vegetation. We encourage the public to continue enjoying their federal, state, and private lands responsibly by being very careful with any fire.”

Campfires still require a campfire permit on the Carson & Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Recreationists need to be fire safe with all their outdoor activities, including insuring that their campfires are dead out. Leaving campfires unattended is a class B misdemeanor. Other important reminders for all outdoor enthusiasts include the following:

· Target practice, riding motorcycles/ATVs without a spark arrester, and careless smoking can all cause unwanted wildland fires.

· The use of propane stoves versus campfires and charcoal grill fires is still preferred in these dry conditions.

· Fireworks are always illegal to possess and use on Nevada’s federal, state, or local lands.

· Open burning on private land still requires a permit from local fire departments.

ISA Arborist Training Reno NV

The Nevada Shade Tree Council (NSTC) in cooperation with the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF), the USDA Forest Service, and the City of Reno Parks and Urban Forestry is sponsoring an Arborist Training Series designed to help prepare those interested in taking the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist Examination and for those interested in proper tree care techniques. The series will be three 8-hour sessions, November 3-5, 2009 at the Northeast Community Center, 1301 Valley Road, Reno

The $85.00 registration fee and form are due to the NSTC no later than October 23, 2009. Agency Purchase orders are accepted, but payment must be made in advance of the training series.

Division of Forestry, Spring Creek High School and FFA Tree Sale

ELKO, Nev. — The Nevada Division of Forestry, Spring Creek High School, and the Silver Sage FFA Chapter are once again teaming up to bring northeastern Nevadans a wide selection of conservation trees and shrubs at reasonable costs. This fundraising event for Silver Sage FFA Chapter and Spring Creek High School allows students to raise money for important club events, as well as to provide locally adapted, affordable trees and shrubs to local landowners. The tree and shrub seedlings range in price from $2.50 to $3.75 each, depending on the size of the seedling and container. These plants are sold to owners who intend to conserve and enhance Nevada’s natural resources through conservation plantings such as:

Shelterbelts
Woodlots
Erosion Control
Wildlife Habitat
Christmas Tree Farms
Streambank Stabilization

The Truckee Meadows Community Forestry Coalition cares about the trees that help make Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County a great place to live and work. While our local governments have dedicated staffs to care for our region’s public trees, there are far more private trees that residents are responsible for keeping healthy. We have been losing mature trees from our community forest. Arborists are concerned that tree care needs, especially tree watering requirements, are not understood by many residents.

State nursery has plants available for fall planting

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Division of Forestry State Tree Nursery in Washoe Valley has a great selection of low cost, conservation plants available for fall planting.

Fall is a great time for planting, warm soils encourage root growth before the ground freezes. Fall plantings with an already established root system will be more tolerant of the summer heat. Take advantage of this time to come visit the Washoe Nursery before it closes for the winter on October 10^th.

The nursery will be open to the public from 8:30am - 3 pm Thursday – Saturday. Plants will be available on a first come first serve basis. For a list of available species please call the nursery at 849-0213 or for the nursery policy and plant list, please visit http://www.forestry.nv.gov. Most species are available in D-pots for $2.25.

Fire Restrictions in Western Nevada Start July 24

Drought conditions, increasing daytime temperatures and several large human-caused fires have prompted the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District Office, the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, and the Nevada Division of Forestry’s Sierra Forest Fire Protection District to announce the implementation of fire restrictions on Friday, July 24, 2009, and lasting until further notice. Vegetation in western Nevada and eastern California has dried out significantly since receiving only about 50-percent of normal snowfall last winter. A large crop of grass and brush is evident at lower elevations and trees and other forest vegetation at higher elevations are quickly drying out. The public is encouraged to safely enjoy the public lands, bearing in mind that the recent Trailer 1 and Red Rock fires were human-caused. Motorists are advised to be careful when driving off-road, because hot exhaust systems can ignite dry grasses. The potential for another devastating fire during the summer is very real. Report fires to the Interagency Dispatch Center, Minden, Nevada, (775) 883-5995, or dial 911.

Fire Restrictions Prohibit

1. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire (using wood, charcoal or any other material), campfire, or stove fire except a portable stove using gas or pressurized liquid fuel, outside of a developed fee campground or picnic area (except by permit).

2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or at a developed campground or picnic area.

3. Welding, or operating an acetylene torch with open flames, except by permit.

4. Using or causing to be used, any explosive, except by permit.

5. Possession or use of fireworks, or any other incendiary device.

6. Use of tracer rounds, steel-core ammunition or exploding targets while recreational

shooting.

7. Open burning (e.g. weeds, brush and yard debris).

State nursery selling TRPA-approved conservation plants and trees

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Division of Forestry’s State Nursery in Washoe Valley is selling conservation plants and trees that are on the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s approved plant list.

The nursery is designed to assist landowners by providing plant material suitable for conservation uses such as windbreaks, soil erosion control, water conservation and wildlife habitats.

The plants are all grown and maintained at the nursery and are conditioned to survive northern Nevada’s cold winters and hot summers. Most plants are available for $2.25.

The nursery is open to the public from 8:30 am to 3 pm Thursday through Saturday until mid-October. Plants are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For a list of available species, please call the nursery at 775-849-0213 or for the nursery policy and plant list, please visit http://www.forestry.nv.gov.

The nursery is located in Washoe Valley at 885 Eastlake Blvd. The NDF nursery encourages buyers to recycle plant containers at the nursery and it will accept any plastic containers larger than 4 inches.
