Arbor Day-Arbor Day Poster Contest
Celebrate Arbor Day - the last Friday of April
The Governor’s Arbor Day Proclamation-2009
Nevada Arbor Day Poster Contest
Since 1996, Nevada 5th graders have participated in the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Arbor Day poster contest. The Nevada Division of Forestry’s Urban Forestry Program sponsors this event to get children thinking about trees and environmental stewardship. Every elementary school in Nevada receives a contest and curriculum packet for their fifth grade teachers in the fall each year. Each school then selects the best poster from all their participating fifth grade classes to enter in the statewide contest.
Nevada’s deadline for submitting posters is the first Friday of March each year. A panel of judges selects a state poster winner which is then entered into the National Arbor Day Contest to compete with 47 other states’ posters. The national winner, his/her parents, and teacher receive an expense-paid trip to the National Arbor Day Awards Weekend in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The national winner also receives a $1,000 Savings Bond and the student’s teacher receives $200.
Nevada’s state poster winner is awarded $50 cash, and each of the three regional winners are awarded $25 cash. These student winners’ teachers also receive awards of educational materials. All awards are all sponsored by the NDF Urban Forestry Program and the Nevada Shade Tree Council with funding support from the USDA Forest Service.
All fifth grade teachers and students are invited to participate in this educational opportunity to foster knowledge about the importance of trees and caring for our environment. For more information, or to receive a curricula packet, contact:
